How lucky I was to have met Frances Reid and to have worked with her. Like so many successful people she was complex. There was not one Frances but many and they all came together in this extraordinary person most people knew as Alice Horton.
Frances was not Alice. Oh, yes, she was wise and kind and fiesty, but she was not grandmotherly. Frances could cuss with the best of them. When her temper would rise no one contradicted her. Her wit was not only cutting it was precise.
I loved talking to Frances. She had been around Hollywood for decades and I loved hearing her stories of the “old” days. It was fascinating to hear the inside stuff about so many of the film and TV idols I grew up watching with wonder. But there was so more to Frances. She was extremely involved in AFTRA (the union that governs working conditions for actors on soaps). If you had a question about work conditions or union rules Frances would, more than likely, know the answer. When it came to politics her liberal out look was always fresh, lively, and humorous.
I will miss Frances Reid. Her brand of grand dame may not come our way again and we are much less for it.
A little over two years ago I had heart surgery. My aeortic valve had been deteriorating over my life time. I had no idea. I had been on many sports teams. Physicals had been passed for the Marine Corps, films, and television shows. I would workout four to six times a week playing basketball, going to the gym, and backpacking. You name it and I did it. Yet the bomb ticked away.
Like Jack Bauer, my cardiologist noticed something at the 11th hour. The surgery saved my life.
One of the many good things that, strangely, came from that moment was a blog my wife’s cousin, Eric Nelson, put together for me. Hundreds of fans and friends wrote of their concern and affection. It also became a community. It was a place for people to speak of their health concerns and other issues of life, both good and bad.
Now, we have another blog. This one will not go away. It is also a place for community. I hope you all will use it to , not only, talk to me, but to communicate with each other.
I will tackle a lot subjects in this blog. Yes, because it is my blog I can do that. Sometimes some of you will disagree with a statement or opinion. I only ask that you disagree respectfully. No foul language, no personal attacks, and no bigotry of any kind will be tolerated. Opinion, smart, informed argument and conversation, and good fun will be encouraged.
I has been over two years since my web site was current. Many of you have experience unanswered emails and uncertainty about events or appearances. I am happy to tell you that those problems have been remedied and this site will be active and informative.
